2008 Martin Van Buren First Spouse Gold

Martin Van Buren’s LibertyYesterday on November 25, 2008, the US Mint released the latest coin in the ongoing First Spouse Gold Coin Series. This release honors the presidency of Martin Van Buren.

Because Van Buren did not have a spouse while serving his term as President, the coin utilizes the design of one of the circulating coins from his era. Prior First Spouse Gold coins that have used this strategy have included the coins honoring Andrew Jackson and Thomas Jefferson.

Martin Van Buren’s Liberty features the obverse design of the Liberty Seated Dime. This coin was produced between 1837-1891 and was designed by Christian Gobrecht. The reverse design features a rendition of young Martin Van Buren reading under a tree. This was designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.

Each coin contains one-half ounce of 24 karat gold. Total mintage will be limited to 40,000 coins. Proof coins are priced at $549.95 and uncirculated coins are priced at $524.95. There is a limit of ten coins per option per household.
